Ravine Lot
It is possible to find differential settlement cracks on the wall, foundation and floor for this type of construction. |

V- cracks vs Pyramid cracks
V-cracks may indicate the foundation is heaving up or moving upward. Pyramid crack is indication the foundation is settling or moving downward. The size of individual crack is not as important as the sum of all the crack size. |

Soil Movement
If the foundation wall is inadequate to sustain the lateral pressure from the soil, you may find horizontal cracks, bowing, leaning, and bulging |

Notches and holes on floor beam and joist
It is not recommended to have notches at the bottom of the wood joist and beam |

Joist Hangers Connection
All nail holes in joist hangers should be used. |

Joist connection to avoid
Mortise &tenon method and notched & resting method are not desirable connection for joist supports |

Cracks on wall
Cracks on wall that are diagonal with rotations may indicate differential settlement of the foundation. The size of individual crack is not as important as the sum of all the crack size. |

Pyramid cracks with sagging lintel are indication of undersize lintel. Horizontal cracks are likely caused by expansion of rusting steel lintels |

Bowed brick veneer wall is caused by rusted masonry ties pulled out of mortar bed or mortar has deteriorated or inadequate number of ties. |

These cracks are caused by clay brick expansion over period of time. |
